ABOUT the PRESS

Gendun Editions is a literary fine press with a home base in Minnesota. The word Gendun--pronounced g, as in girl, en, as in end, and dun, like done--is Tibetan in origin and translates roughly as assembly, though it is commonly and more accurately referenced in English as sangha, an Indian word meaning the assembly of all beings. Led by this idea, Gendun Editions is a collection of typographers, poets, designers, artists, papermakers, book binders, typecasters, writers, and friends coming together with a single aim: the creation of the book. We are an assembly of craftspeople, an assembly of artists, an assembly of materials.

Each book is designed and made from scratch using moveable type and fine artisan papers printed letterpress--most of the same techniques developed centuries ago by Gutenberg are practiced at the press; each edition is bound by hand. The mission of Gendun Editions is to print books of integral quality and design with an engaging aesthetic by publishing first-edition texts, translations, and images by emerging writers and artists, as well as distinguished, celebrated poets and authors--aiming to preserve and advance an admiration of, appreciation for, and devotion to the written word.

Though the word gendun is found in Buddhist scripture and is incorporated into the name of many Buddhist teachers--past and current--the press remains secular, promoting only the idea and virtue behind the beautiful word: a meaningful collaboration of minds and hands.
