About the Text
Being the shortest book in the bible Obadiah is often noted for its brevity, its one chapter often occupies less than a single standard page. However, it is admired at the same time for its succinctness, recounting the total destruction of the land of Edom for its people's refusal to help neighboring Israel—thus acting as an enemy. Though, this negligence is regarded as worse than a direct attack, for the Edomites and Israelites historically share a common bloodline; thus, it is held as a betrayal of family. The book also explores themes which are still important today: the responsibilities that greater, stronger nations have to protect their feebler, more vulnerable neighbors from outside attack; and the cyclical notion of action/reaction, “as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.” The book’s authorship is accredited to Obadiah, a minor prophet, whose name means “worshiper of the Lord.”
About the Artist
Jennifer Myers received her B.A. from Hampshire College in 2002 and is a candidate for the M.F.A. in Intermedia from the University of Iowa. She grew up in New York City where both parents were writers. They encouraged creativity and did not find it strange when she grew up to be an artist. She works in a variety of media – drawings, photography, installation, animation, and writing. She likes it all. Art is a song you sing from the heart. So, in that sense, she is truly blessed.
